Store-bought spices can be expensive and often contain additives and preservatives that we’d rather not have in our food. That’s why we’ve decided to take matters into our own hands and show you how to dehydrate herbs and make your own spices!
Not only is making your own spices a fun and satisfying project, but it’s also a great way to save money and control exactly what goes into your seasonings. Plus, there’s something so satisfying about using herbs that you’ve grown and dried yourself. It’s like adding a little bit of love to every dish you make.
So, without further ado, here’s how to dehydrate herbs and make your own spices:
Step 1: Pick Your Herbs
The first step in making your own spices is to choose which herbs you want to use. You can use fresh herbs from your garden or the grocery store, but just make sure they’re clean and dry before you start the dehydration process.
Step 2: Preheat Your Dehydrator
If you have a dehydrator, great! Preheat it to the appropriate temperature for herbs (usually around 95-115°F). If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can also use your oven on its lowest setting with the door cracked open slightly to allow for airflow.
Step 3: Prepare Your Herbs
Remove the leaves from the stems and spread them out in a single layer on the dehydrator trays. Make sure there’s plenty of space between the leaves to allow for air circulation.
Step 4: Dehydrate Your Herbs
Place the trays in your dehydrator or oven and let the herbs dry out for several hours, checking on them periodically. The exact drying time will depend on the type of herb you’re using and the humidity in your area.
Step 5: Grind Your Herbs
Once your herbs are completely dry, it’s time to grind them into a fine powder. You can use a spice grinder, mortar and pestle, or even a coffee grinder for this step. Just make sure to store your freshly ground spices in an airtight container to maintain their freshness.
